Warriors of the North and Dark Side ain't bad, though Dark Side is the weakest part of them all. And there are more people who favor AP/CW above TL. A better game it ain't and that is also just a matter of taste. It's not needed to get KB:TL first, as the only thing which it has in common is the princess and the King and in AP/CW you're going after the hero of KB:TL. KB: Legions is a facebook game with some of the same art assets, don't really consider it part of the series.

warriors of the north and darkside aren't worth it unless you've played the first two to death and need more of the same but crappier. AP/Crossworlds is definitely worth playing if you liked that though.
